Today I have been....

Peeling and chopping apples, cooking them up and making apple sauce.

Investigating the courgette patch and finding all the rogue ones, hiding under the foliage.

Selling yesterday's eggs to a neighbour who popped in.

Washing.  Lots of washing.

Stoning plums ready for the freezer - 9lbs stashed away in 1lb bags ready for lots of winter crumbles and stewed fruit.

Admiring the cat, sleeping among the tomato plants in the sun.......

It has been a good day, weather wise, and the EFG is home from her shopping trip.  All back together again tonight.

I spent yesterday stewing lots of apples (a gift from a neighbour) and freezing them (I use jam jars for freezing - the round ones are find but the square ones have cracked a couple of times, don't know why). Also got free eggs from a friend and 2 cucumbers from another neighbour as a thank you.

Wow, so busy! I'm interested in how you store the apple sauce, I have more apples given to me than I have freezer space for, I'm a bit nervous of storing the sauce in jars without the big sugar input of jam to help preserve it. Do you just sterilize your jars in the usual way (boiling water /oven) before adding the apple sauce, which I'm guessing doesn't need much sugar? I would love to know, I have a bag of apples waiting for attention. Thanks, Vee x
PS I've finished knitting hats for shoe boxes for the time being & am enjoying making a baby blanket for a baby due next month, so lots of time spent knitting! All best wishes, Vee x

@Vee - my apple sauce has plenty of sugar in it! I found the idea at Sue's blog, New Life in the Country, last year, and made a batch - which we loved for the convenience, as well as not taking up space in the freezer - and I thought I would make more this year. So easy to whip out a jar and heat up quickly rather than having to thaw apples first. Could also use to make wee apple crumbles if not making a lot. One or two-person portions are high on my list now, unfortunately. The YFG doesn't like stewed fruit, so I made some small jars so that there is just enough for me over a couple of days, or to make a couple of individual crumbles in ramekins.

@Vee - sorry - yes, just sterilise the jars as normal and then I screw the lids down whilst the jars and apples are hot, so they vacuum seal themselves again. They've all gone down tight this year. Think I may do more if I get more apples!

No one else in our house likes stewed fruit apart from me. I eat it with custard, natural yoghurt or porridge, or make a crumble and eat it over 2 or 3 days.

Great, thanks for the information,I'm going to try it out, I've been promised more apples & there won't be room in the freezer. Thanks again, Vee x
